Our moods rise and fall, our resolve comes and goes, and our love can run hot one week and cold the next. God is not like that, and it is one of the steadiest comforts in the Bible. Right in the middle of Lamentations, a book of raw grief over a ruined city, sits the line people have clung to ever since: his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is his faithfulness (Lamentations 3:22-23). That it grows in such hard ground is exactly the point.
Part of what makes God trustworthy is that he does not change. Psalm 90:2 says that from everlasting to everlasting, he is God, before the mountains were born. Isaiah 40:8 contrasts the grass that withers and the flower that fades with the word of our God, which stands for ever. The things we lean on in this world keep shifting under us. He is the fixed point, the same yesterday, today and for ever, which means a promise he made long ago is as solid now as the day he spoke it.
The most reassuring thing of all is that his faithfulness does not depend on ours. 2 Timothy 2:13 says that if we are faithless, he remains faithful, for he cannot deny himself. Hosea lived this out as a picture: told to love a wife who kept wandering, so that we could see a God who keeps claiming a people who keep drifting (Hosea 2:23). And Romans 8 insists that nothing can separate us from his love. When our grip on him weakens, his grip on us does not.
So on the days you feel you have let God down, or your faith feels threadbare, do not measure his commitment by the state of yours. Take one of these verses and let it remind you who is actually holding on to whom. His mercies will be new again tomorrow morning, whether you slept well or barely at all. He has not changed his mind about you.

- What does it mean that God is faithful?
- It means he keeps his promises, every one, and that he is utterly reliable because he does not change. Where people can be fickle, forgetful or worn down, God is consistent: what he has said, he will do, and who he has been, he will go on being. His faithfulness is woven through the whole Bible's story, from the promises to Abraham, kept across centuries, to the resurrection of Jesus. To call God faithful is to say you can build your life on him without fear that he will move, fail, or quietly change his mind.
- Why is Lamentations 3:22-23 so loved, and where does it sit?
- It is loved because it offers hope without denying pain, and where it sits makes that hope all the more striking. Lamentations is a book of grief, five poems mourning the destruction of Jerusalem, and right at its centre the writer says that God's mercies never end and are new every morning. The light is brightest because the surrounding darkness is real. That is why the verse has comforted so many: it does not promise the night is not happening, only that morning, and fresh mercy, will come, because God's faithfulness is great.

- Then 2 Timothy 2:13 is for you: if we are faithless, he remains faithful, for he cannot deny himself. Your standing with God does not rest on the strength of your faith but on the steadiness of his character. He is not surprised by your stumbles, and he does not love you less on your worst days. The point is not how tightly you are holding on to him, but how securely he is holding on to you. Bring him the weak faith honestly. He has carried far weaker, and he is faithful when we are not.
