A 7-Day Bible Reading Plan for Grief

For anyone walking through loss, in the rawness of early grief or the long ache that comes after.

Grief is not a problem to be solved. It is love with nowhere to go, and it deserves to be treated gently. The Bible never tells the grieving to hurry up or cheer up. It sits with them. Over these seven days the readings make room for sorrow and, without rushing you, point towards a hope that does not pretend the loss away. There is no right pace. Take a day twice if you need to.

  1. Day 1: Psalm 34:18

Begin where you are. God is not far off from the brokenhearted; he is near, and near to the crushed in spirit. You do not have to feel strong to be held.

  2. Day 2: Matthew 5:4

Jesus calls the mourning blessed, not because grief is good, but because comfort is promised to them by name. Mourning is not a failure of faith.

  3. Day 3: Psalm 23

The shepherd walks with us through the darkest valley, not around it. Notice the small word "through". There is a way out the other side, and a companion in the dark.

  4. Day 4: Revelation 21:4

A day is promised when God himself wipes away every tear. This does not make today’s tears less real; it gives them an end set by his own hand.

  5. Day 5: Psalm 121

When you cannot look up, this psalm lifts your eyes for you. Your help comes from the One who made heaven and earth and does not sleep.

  6. Day 6: Romans 8:38-39

Death is the first thing on Paul’s long list of what cannot separate us from God’s love. The grave does not have the last word over those who are his.

  7. Day 7: Lamentations 3:22-23

From the saddest book in the Bible comes the line about mercies new every morning. Even now, grace arrives one day at a time. That is enough for tomorrow.

Grief does not follow a timetable, and this plan does not end it. But you are not carrying it alone, and the God who wept at a friend’s grave is near to you in yours. Come back to these passages whenever you need them.
