Gratitude does something to a heart that little else can. It re-tunes it. Psalm 103:2 puts its finger on the problem when it says, 'forget not all his benefits', because forgetting is exactly what we do. The good things slip by unnoticed while the one thing that went wrong fills the whole screen. Thankfulness is the deliberate work of remembering, of counting what we have been given rather than only what we lack, and it slowly changes the person who practises it.
In the Bible, giving thanks is also the doorway into God's presence. Psalm 100:4 invites us to enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise. Gratitude is not a polite add-on at the end of a prayer. It is how the people of God come near to him, turning from grumbling to wonder, from taking things for granted to seeing the hand behind them. You can feel your perspective lift as you do it.
There is a story Jesus told with his own life that we find quietly convicting. Ten men with leprosy were healed, and only one came back to say thank you (Luke 17:11-19). The honest sting is that most of us are usually somewhere in the nine. We ask, we receive, and we hurry on. Gratitude is the discipline of being the one who turns round. It does not require a perfect life or an easy season; Scripture even speaks of giving thanks in all circumstances, not for everything but in everything, trusting the God who is good through all of it.
So start small and start now. Name three things before you sleep tonight, however ordinary, and thank the God who gave them. You will not always feel grateful, and that is fine; gratitude is more a practice than a feeling, and the feeling tends to follow the practice. A thankful heart is not one that has more. It is one that has learned to notice.

The one healed man who came back to Jesus simply turned round and said it out loud. Do that, regularly, and you will often find the feeling catches up with the words rather than the other way about.

- Because it keeps us honest about reality. Forgetting the Giver and assuming we made our own good fortune is the quiet root of a lot of pride and discontent. Thankfulness puts things back the right way up: it remembers that life, breath and every good gift come from God's hand. It is also simply the warm response of a heart that has noticed it is loved. God does not need our thanks to feel complete, but he delights in it the way anyone delights in being genuinely appreciated by someone they love.
